Earth Day During Times of #Stayhome
This year’s Earth Day will be happening at a very strange time of crisis. We bet you have heard all about the wondrous impact of #stayhome measures such as *dolphins swimming in Italy’s canals, clear skies in decades and better air quality than before and more.
With all the seemingly positive outcomes of Covid-19 measures undertaken by governments on a global level, you might be thinking that Mother Nature is finally given the chance to reset itself and that we are finally slowing climate change. Well, the thing is, we have damaged the Earth way more than a few months of #stayhome and reduced carbon emissions can actually resolve.
So, in the spirit of Earth Day, we will be sharing with you some tips to #savetheearth and #staysafe in this times of crisis.
1. Takeaways in your own container
This has multiple benefits. Given that supply chains are likely affected/delayed, in bringing your own containers, you will help store owners to preserve their stock and let them use them for more urgent needs.
Since you can only leave your homes to get necessities, you are leaving your homes with a purpose. This gives you the best chance to start this habit of planning and #BYOC.
2. #BYOB for supermarket runs
Seeing as we are all #stayinghome and reducing our trips outdoors, we are likely to buy more per supermarket run than before. This translates to more plastic bags being used.
Do Mother Nature a favour and bring your own bag. Not only will you help to cut down plastic usage, those reusable bags are also tougher and easier to carry your heavy buys with (thank god for those thicker handles!).
3. Be conscious about your electricity usage
Being cooped up at home is definitely going to increase your electricity usage per household. Considering that most are working from home, they might not even be switching off their air-conditioning at all on a daily basis!
Using electricity emits carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases. With more electricity used, more of such gases will rise into the atmosphere and create even more heat. A hotter Singapore is going to be tough.
Now and moving forward, try to be conscious of your electricity usage. It does not matter if you can afford it or not, its a matter of whether you still want a planet to live on till you expire.
Did you know that using a fan uses 50 – 60 watts compared to air-conditioning which uses anything from 500 – 1000 watts? Well, we leave it up to you to do the math.
Post Covid-19 and beyond.
This unprecedented time of #stayinghome is allowing nature to take a break. This is also a very good time to start some good habits to carry you through post covid-19 because believe it or not, this too shall pass.
Lots of children are also staying home and we hope you will inculcate good green values with them as they will be inheriting this planet, for better or for worse.
