Haven’t you heard? Singapore is number 1 for most expensive city, exceeding even New York and Paris! Add on raising a child and you would probably feel that burning hole in your pocket burning even larger. *gasps* To help all you mummies and daddies out there put out all the fires and save your pockets, we have come up with 9 fun activities that families can do for absolutely FREE. Now who says fun has to come with a price tag?

#1. Catch a movie under the stars

DBS Movies By The Bay

Relish reliving those bygone days of drive-through cinemas where movies screened under the stars? You are in luck as every third Fridays and Saturdays of the month, DBS holds their monthly DBS Movies By The Bay where they screen movies on wide screen at Marina Bay! They even give out free popcorn at that! Can’t think of what to do for family time? Try this next time!

#2. Have a Picnic Party

How many times have you heard Singapore being lauded for being a clean and green country? Where is the green, you say? Well, one place we can think of that’s right smack in the middle of our concrete jungle would be Marina Barrage. It has been such a hot spot for picnics and kite-flying that we think it would be the perfect chill-out spot with the kids! Prep some simple yet delicious sandwiches and a comfy picnic mat and you are all set.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

If you suspect that Marina Barrage may be too much of a hot-spot for you, head over to Singapore Botanic Gardens instead. This beautiful 183 acres of wondrous green has just been listed as Singapore’s very first UNESCO Heritage Site! Have a picnic and take a tour round the place between sandwiches and you and your little one may both be learning something new!

#3. Show your little ones the bird’s eye view of the city

ION Sky

We are sure you have been to Ion a million times but have you been to ION Sky? If you haven’t, you are missing out! Located 56 storeys above Orchard road, it’s a bird’s eye view like no other. On the window panes, there are even signages that shows you the landmarks of Singapore! Why not introduce these places to your little ones between shopping trips around Orchard? We are sure both you and your little one will enjoy this gorgeous view.

 #4. Visit Xiao Gui Lin

Xiao Gui Lin

Rocks has never looked so beautiful. We are not sure about you but doesn’t this place remind you of those chinese martial arts movies where the main character and the antagonist have an epic showdown with swords clashing and bodies flying? Here, at Xiao Gui Lin, we bet it would feel a little surreal and even make you wonder if you haven’t unknowningly stepped onto a teleportation device and being transported right into China! So make a trip down and take the chance to show your child that Singapore isn’t all just buildings and cars.

#5. Head out to a Museum

Don’t want to stay at home but can’t bring yourself to fight the heat by going out? Why not visit Singapore Art Museum (SAM)! While contemporary art may be uncomprehendable to most, you may still be happy to know that SAM has a learning gallery just for little ones to have their first taste of contemporary artform. Unlike the usual exhibits where the showcased pieces are often of the passive nature where people just look on and read the descriptions, these galleries are interactive and encourages kids to use their senses to fully enjoy the artworks. Remember to download their worksheets to help facilitate your little one’s experience!

#6. Feed the farm animals

Farmart Centre

Old Macdonald is not the only one that has a farm. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city sits this gem where cute little farm animals reside. If that sounds good to you, hurry make a trip down to Farmart Centre. Here, parents and kids alike can get up close to the available farm animals like goats and rabbits and even have the chance to feed them too!

#7. Ride into the sunset

Punggol Waterway

 Grab the bikes and head over to the picturesque Punggol Waterway where the tranquility will probably make this a frequent spot for you and your family. The perfect time to start your biking adventure would be around 4-5pm so that you can end off the perfect day with an even more perfect sunset.

#8. Listen to a free concert

 Esplanade’s Beautiful Sunday

 We are sure most parents have their little kids enrolled in music lessons or probably have the intention to. So why not take it one step further and let them listen to beautiful music by professionals. Who knows, they may even be inspired by it! Esplanade holds this series of free concerts held once a month on a Sunday performed by professional homegrown music groups.

#9. Put on your hiking boots

 Hiking along the Southern ridges

 We think that an active lifestyle is the best kind of lifestyle! So cloth your child in exercise wear, grab your hiking boots and start your walking adventure along the Southern Ridges. Some highlights along the way would be the gorgeous bird’s eye view of Singapore’s water front and southern islands, the may-be-scary forest walk and the ever-popular Henderson Waves.
